Bit and Spur 4-H Club – March 2014 Club of the Month
Congratulations to the Bit and Spur 4-H Club from Scotts Bluff County for being selected as your March 2014 Nebraska 4-H Club of the Month!
The Bit and Spur Horse 4-H Club of Scottsbluff, Nebraska is celebrating their 50th year as an organization serving youth since 1964. The Bit and Spur 4-H Club are extremely active learning about horses, attending judging’s, clinics, parades, trail rides, campouts, and tours, learning about record keeping, preparing speeches and demonstrations and listening to a multitude of guest speakers. They have ridden at County Fairs, District and State Horse Shows and at Ft. Robinson Horse Camp; played Monopoly on Horseback and Survivor of Riding Skills. They tested their knowledge of horses through Horse Bowl, and Skill-a-thons. Some of their members represented 4-H internationally in Taiwan, Spain, Australia and New Zealand. Other members have gone to the National 4-H Congress and the 4-H Global Conference. Two of their members have been Nebraska State High School Rodeo Queens and two have been Miss Rodeo NE. This is their thirteenth year to host a horse show and picnic for the handicapped children and their parents of Camp Scott. Each of the Bit and Spur officers are in charge of a committee such as the Events, Publicity, Ribbons, Numbers and Cheerleading in preparations for the Horse Show. They served over 200 people last year. After, the picnic the 4-H members put on a mini horse show for the Campers and they let them ride their horses. Last year, a boy who was blind rode for the first time and he didn’t want to get off the horse. They would have to help Campers take their leg braces off so they can ride the horse.
The Bit and Spur Horse 4-H Club also help the law enforcement officers in our county with the publicity for their Polar Plunge and Torch Run to earn monies for the Special Olympics. They currently have accumulated one hundred and eleven years of experience from their three leaders. They recently elected new officers for the year and are planning for a great 50th year using our head, heart, hands and health for better living for our club, our community, our country and our world. The Nebraska 4-H Foundation and Nebraska 4-H Ambassadors are proud to call the Bit and Spur 4-H Club of the Month for March 2014.
